Review: Jochum's Heartfelt Choral Music for Philips Box

Decca Eloquence (Australia) has issued another very smart box--the logical sequel to its "Jochum's Philips Orchestral Recordings" collection. Even though these titles were included in the big DG Jochum boxed sets, they certainly merit separate release. You get Bach's B-Minor Mass, his two Passions and the Christmas Oratorio, Haydn's Creation, and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, all played and sung with this conductor's typical warmth, sincerity, and care to realize the musical sense of the text. Oh, and there's a brief Magnificat by Rudolf Mengelberg, nephew of the famous conductor, although I typically get them mixed up. Seen one Mengelberg, you've seen 'em all. Great soloists too. This is first class, plain and simple.
