Santiam River Oregon | Agates, Carnelian, Petrified Wood

Rockhounding on the Santiam River South, where it leads into the Willamette, near the end of the Luckiamute. We started this late summer/early fall adventure with sunshine, and in Oregon fashion, ended with rain. Hoping for agates, but taking whatever the universe provided. We also saw a lot of material still needing explored. Most of our finds were toward the end of our trek. Starting from a rest area near Ankeny Hill, and ending near the Buena Vista Ferry, we followed the River through some interesting flows and landed on a dozen rock shores and rock bars. We ended up with some of the best petrified wood, and really interesting agates, carnelians, jaspers and jagates one could find. If you take this rockhounding / kayaking trip, be ready for some swift waters, and a random Oregon Farm dog(black lab) who may try to come home with you in your kayak when you give him treats. Enjoy!
