There are many good chess openings for black against e4 including the French Defense, Scandinavian Defense, Sicilian Defense, and many more! However, what can we play against white to take our opponent by surprise and out of their chess opening theory. Well, in today's video we cover the Guatemala Defense which starts off with the Owen's Defense. The Owen's Defense starts off with b6 against e4, and players such as Magnus Carlsen have had great success with this chess opening for black! However, with the Guatemala Defense, we aren't going to play the usual Bb7 move looking to fianchetto our bishop, but Ba6! This move is an absolutely crazy one, but can lead to a fun chess game. The Guatemala Defense is an enjoyable chess opening for beginners as it is fun to play, will take the opponent by surprise, and is playable. The Guatemala is not considered to be a top tier chess opening, but is a fun option for those players who enjoy weird and tricky chess openings that will take their opponent by surprise. The Guatemala is an especially interesting option for the Owen's Defense player, as all one needs to do is move the bishop one more square, looking to get rid of that bishop on f1. The Guatemala Defense could be compared to an opening like the Crab Opening or Bullfrog Gambit, as it is an animal chess opening which looks strange but somehow works. Playing chess openings such as this can also help the chess player improve fast, as it requires them to use their brain and think outside the box. This is not a chess opening where we need to memorize lines, but simply play the best move in front of us. It also requires the opponent to not rely on their opening theory, but their overall understanding of chess opening strategy. In today's video, we cover some tricks and tips to give you a solid chess opening game, and we hope that you enjoy learning how to play this chess opening system against e4!
