USS KIDD drydocking playlist: Β Β Β β’Β DrydockingΒ 2024-2025Β Β After arriving at the Thoma-Sea shipyard on May 2nd, 2024, dockside restoration work began on the USS KIDD (DD-661). Three months later, on August 13th, 2024, the ship was positioned onto one of Thoma-Sea's floating drydocks by LA Carriers, marking the first time in over 60 years that the USS KIDD has had access to her hull for repairs. LA Carriers boats started shifting the USS KIDD in the early morning rotating her, facing bow first, to enter the floating drydock. The ship was held in position as the drydock was flooded. Once the drydock was submerged, the ship was shifted into position on the drydock and precisely secured by wire ropes. Then the wire ropes were adjusted with winches that aligned the USS KIDD onto her keel blocks. The drydock was then refloated and the USS KIDD sat perfectly on top of her keel blocks. Upon completion of dewatering, the drydock was shifted to the repair section of the shipyard. Once the drydock was moored, hull repairs were scheduled to start immediately. During her time on drydock the USS KIDD will have the hull plates around her cradle's touchpoints cropped and renewed. This will include adding extra steel to reinforce these cradle touchpoints. The exterior and hull will also be blasted and painted to her 1944 Measure 32-10D camouflage. The towboats on duty that day were the motor vessel "John Boy", the motor vessel "Trey Paul", and the motor vessel "Bosco", owned and operated by LA Carriers. Capt. Bill Purvis General Manager of Thoma-Sea's Repair Division coordinated the operation. Tim NesSmith livestreamed the drydocking to the Veterans Museum YouTube channel with Park Stephenson and the rest of the museum's staff.
