Raising the Bismarck: Transforming the Deep-Sea Fortress into a Global Peace Observatory. The Bismarck was a German battleship, the first of the Bismarck class, operated by the Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, one of the key figures in the unification of Germany in 1871, its construction began on July 1, 1936, at the Blohm & Voss shipyards. It was launched on February 14, 1939, and commissioned into the German fleet on August 24, 1940. The Bismarck and its sister ship, the Tirpitz, were the largest warships built by Nazi Germany and two of the largest ships ever built by a European power.
