Welcome to Femina City of Women ‘Who was Sumuru? ‘It was said that she was an ice-cold fascinating genius whose hypnotic powers impelled all men to do her bidding. It was said she was a fanatic who ruled her followers with oriental despotism. It was said… ‘But what was the truth? Nobody really knew’ – from the cover blurb of ‘Sins of Sumuru’ by Sax Rohmer Harry Alan Towers was a producer par excellence. His biography should be a must-read for any producer. He made three Sumuru films. The first two starring Shirley Eaton as the mysterious super-criminal. The second, ‘The Girl from Rio’, was directed by Jesus Franco. I noted that in his biography of Jess Franco, ‘Murderous Passions’, the author, Stephen Thrower, is looking for someone to blame for what he sees as the misogynistic and uninspiring nature of this film. As the author of a book on Franco, one which is only difficult to read because it is just so damn heavy, he doesn’t want to blame Franco. He prefers to put the 'blame' on Towers and Rohmer. I also really like Franco's work, but I disagree with his take on this film. It may owe its origins to Rohmer and Towers, but it is a quintessential Franco movie. I love Thrower's book, but he sometimes comes across as a little overly serious (not a bad thing necessarily). 'The Girl From Rio' is not a serious film. It is pure playfulness. A defiantly camp example of its time (1969). Thrower does concede, however, that while he doesn't like this film that much, it looks fantastic. This is only five years on from Eaton's iconic naked but for gold paint death scene in 'Goldfinger'. Here, however, she is pure villainous evil. She wants to create a world where men do not exist. But she is no kinder to the women she rules over than the men she is out to destroy. According to Thrower, seeing this film put her off screen acting for life. I'm not sure I believe this but... maybe. It's a shame if true because she's great in it. She commands with a glance. For me, it's not a film to write essays about, but it is one to enjoy. And I found two of the Sumuru books at a second-hand shop a while ago and found them immensely entertaining.
