I learned Hogskin or “Hog Skin”, several years ago. It’s in the key of C, which seldom comes up in my jam circles. The thing I love about this fiddle tune is its gentle flow. It’s not as full of notes as so many C tunes are characterized by. Hogskin is a Kentucky tune, so maybe that explains its sweeter nature. There are two noted sources for this tune. Both are from Owsley County. The most noted might be from Paul Goodman and was recorded in the field by Bruce Greene in 1977. The other comes from a recording at Berea College of Effie Pierson as collected by John Harrod in 1979. The notes on the Berea website of Effie’s version say “w/Donald Goodman.” I don’t know if Donald Goodman is related to Paul Goodman, but they seem to be from the same county. Stephen Rapp–Banjo; Paul Kirk–Fiddle; and Michael Seiser–Guitar.
