What if...The Shamen were an Oi! band? Imagine, if you will, an alternative universe, not entirely unlike our own. The main difference between this timeline and our own is that, rather than gravitating from psychedelia to dance music as the eighties progress, here, Scots pranksters The Shamen become completely immersed in the skinhead punk subgenre known as Oi! Founder member Colin Angus becomes fascinated by skinhead after stumbling across a job lot of Richard Allen's novels, dedicated to the subculture in an Aberdeen charity shop in 1987. By 1992, Angus and recent recruit Richard 'Mr. C' West are fully committed to skinhead culture, sporting shaven heads, docs, sta-prest and Ben Shermans, with ACAB tattooed across their knuckles. The trippy whimsy of their early work has been replaced by raw, thumping yob-punk, heavily influenced by The Business, The Angelic Upstarts and the 4-Skins, and they play to small nut dedicated audiences of die-hard skins around the UK and Europe. It comes as a surprise, then, when one of their songs, a rabble-rousing aggro anthem parodying the drug-related lingo of '90s rave culture becomes a runaway hit, earning the band an unexpected appearance on Top Of The Pops. The BBC receives record numbers of complaints, and the band are blacklisted from all future broadcasts, earning a notoriety that assures them a permanent place in the Oi! hall of fame! Written by Angus/West I do not own the rights to the song, Mr C's vocal, or any of the clips/images used. Backing track performed, arranged and produced by me, using GarageBand andf whatever instuments I had to hand.
