The war officially started on the night of 3rd December 1971, when the Pakistani air force simultaneously attacked several Indian airfields on India’s western front. With Pakistan believing that any future war will be fought like the last war – as they did in 1965 – and hoping to draw India’s full resources onto India’s western front to leave its few division in East Pakistan to continue with their mayhem, thus India’s decision to fight on both fronts took Pakistan by complete surprise. It led to many battles on both sides of India, and many first in the Indo-Pak context. The Indian army’s swift crossing of the mighty Meghna river led to the surrender at Dacca of over 90,000 Pakistani personnel – the largest since WW- II – India’s diplomats failed to take advantage of this massive military victory. And while the war was about Bangladesh, the Simla agreement that followed was over the Kashmir issue! It led only to an agreement to convert the CFL into the LoC. Why did India’s leadership squander away all the gains? Defence Analyst & Consulting Editor of Times Network Maroof Raza brings you a series that will look at the several wars that India has fought since 1947. #1971indopakwar #indiopakwar #bangladesh Times Now - Times Now News channel examines news with in-depth analysis.
