Amazing Change! Boring Wall Becomes A Beautiful Board And Batten Wall

Board and Batten? Wall Trim? Wainscoting? There are so many different names for this kind of finish carpentry project. Whatever you call it, it will spruce up any boring wall in your house. In my house I have this 22 foot long wall that you see as soon as you open the front door. It has been boring and bland with nothing to see but textured sheetrock wall. When we moved in we wanted to find something to do with it. My wife wanted something elegant and classy that people would notice when they came to our home. First impressions are everything and this is the first thing they will see. The original baseboard was molded and since the battens are about 3/4 inch thick, I had to replace the existing baseboard with baseboard that was not molded, that way the battens would sit flush on the new baseboard. I learned that aesthetically it looks better if the battens look a little proud than recessed. But if you can get them flush, then that is ideal. I used card stock to make the battens flush with the baseboard. I did this by using 3x5 cards to find the right thickness and taped them to the back of the battens. Because walls are not always (even rarely) perfectly square and flat, it is difficult to achieve flush battens without a little help. The nice thing is that you can't even see the card stock. Then I installed the chair rail with a little help from my wife Amy. Use a level to get it just right! After that I cut and installed the battens. Finding the right spacing for the battens can be challenging. Just make sure they are evenly spaced. No one will notice if they are off by a few millimeters but don't veer far from that. Aesthetics are everything!. I created my own molded trim piece on top of the chair rail but running it through my router and then taking a little off the width to get that perfect look. The top trim piece really takes the quality of this project a notch up. Some people don't do it, but I say take the extra time to do it right. You'll never regret it. I hope you enjoyed this video!
