How I swap my CO2 tank use for planted aquarium tank. My main CO2 cylinder ran out of gas a few weeks ago, so I've been using my spare 2L cylinder. Well, now that one has run out too. Time to refill and swap them. Avoid careless mistakes like forgetting turning on the regulator. For tanks with dense plants, CO2 is essential to sustain plant growth. Plants grows make food through photosynthesis, which requires strong light and adequate CO2. A sign of good photosynthesis is when you see air bubbles under the leaves, usually from noon to evening. Aquatic plants consume nitrates for growth, which come from the breakdown of fish waste and leftover fish food. I don’t use much “liquid CO2,” except for killing hair algae.
