After the fall of the Liao Dynasty collapse in 1125, a group of Khitan nobles refused to disappear from history. Led by the visionary commander Yelü Dashi, they fled west across the vast Eurasian steppe and founded a powerful new empire in Central Asia. This state, known as the Kara-Khitan Khanate, ruled over a diverse land of nomads, merchants, and ancient Silk Road cities. At its height, the empire defeated powerful rivals and controlled major trade routes linking China, the Islamic world, and the steppe. But the empire’s fate would eventually collide with the rise of the Mongols. After the usurper Kuchlug seized power, unrest spread across the realm. In 1218, the Mongol general Jebe launched a campaign that would bring the Kara-Khitan state to its dramatic end during the era of Genghis Khan. From imperial refugees to rulers of Central Asia, this is the story of the empire that fled China and reshaped the Silk Road. #KaraKhitan #MongolEmpire #GenghisKhan #SilkRoad #AsianHistory #LiaoDynasty 0:00 Intro 0:38 1125 — The Liao Dynasty collapses. 2:02 1125 — Yelü Dashi leads Khitan followers west. 2:26 1134 — Yelü Dashi establishes the Kara-Khitan Khanate. 3:40 1141 — Kara-Khitan defeat the Seljuk Empire at the Battle of Qatwan. 5:00 1143 — Death of Yelü Dashi. 5:24 1150–1163 — Rule of Yelü Yilie, continuing Kara-Khitan power. 6:07 1208 — Kuchlug arrives in the Kara-Khitan. 6:52 1211 — Kuchlug seizes power in the Kara-Khitan Khanate. 8:48 1218 — Mongol general Jebe defeats Kuchlug.
