Michael Murphy

Mike Murphy was born in Ludington, Michigan, in 1947. He was drafted into the Army in 1966 and trained as a military policeman and initially served at Fort Hood, Texas, where much of his training focused on riot control. He was sent to Vietnam in August 1967, and served a year with the 716th Military Police Battalion in Saigon. He guarded different installations around the city, often officers' quarters, and also did some patrolling. When the Tet Offensive broke out in January 1968, he was guarding an ammunition dump by himself, but was not attacked. His position was close to the US embassy, and he could hear the fighting there from his position. When he returned home that August, he had only two months left on his enlistment, and received an early discharge.
