He is purity, ethics, correct behaviour, what we all aspire to be. So I am very excited to be here. And I bring a message of kind friendship from the people of Cuba to the people of the province of Santa Fe and the city of Rosario." 9. Roque exiting building and is cheered by Che enthusiasts 10. Roque''''''''s van driving away STORYLINE: Cuba''''''''s foreign minister paid homage on Thursday to the Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, touring the house where the Argentine-born doctor once lived, likening the visit to a "pilgrimage." Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque dropped by the elegant, second-story apartment in Rosario, a port city northwest of Buenos Aires, midway through a five-day visit to Argentina. The Cuban dignitary smiled broadly as he talked about the man who fought alongside Fidel Castro in the 1959 Cuban revolution and remains an icon memorialised in giant portraits across the Caribbean island. "For any Cuban, coming here is like a pilgrimage," Roque Perez said, touring the apartment where a black-and-white photo of Guevara stood. "He was an ethical man, the kind of person we all aspire to become. For Cubans, ''''''''Che'''''''' is sacred." Roque Perez also toured a nearby plaza named after the Argentine revolutionary, spending a few minutes at a small monument marked with a photo of "Che" - the only visible commemorations of him in the city where he lived until he was 4 years old. Guevara spent his early childhood in Rosario, 180 miles (250 kilometers) northwest of Buenos Aires, but the family later moved to the central province of Cordoba. He linked up with Castro and other Cuban revolutionaries in Mexico in the mid-1950s, becoming Castro''''''''s chief lieutenant in the years after the rebel victory. Later granted Cuban citizenship, Guevara assumed a lead role in transforming the nation''''''''s economy after the revolution. He headed Cuba''''''''s agrarian reform program and was president of the Bank of Cuba and ministry of industry. He also wrote several books on guerrilla warfare and communist theory, used by revolutionary movements worldwide. Guevara later returned to the business of revolution, helping organise left-wing rebels in the Congo and in Bolivia. He was captured and killed by the Bolivian army on Oct. 8, 1967. His remains were returned to Cuba three decades later. Earlier Thursday, Roque Perez met with President Nestor Kirchner in a sign of closer relations. Argentina and Cuba had a period of strained relations during the 1990s that saw Argentina draw closer to the United States. Washington has not had diplomatic ties with Cuba since 1961. Last year, Argentina reinstated its ambassador in Havana after a two-year absence because of diplomatic differences over Argentina''''''''s support of the annual UN Human Rights Commission vote to condemn the island.
