Is China about the dominate the action game market? On my recent trip to China to play S-Game's Phantom Blade Zero (@PhantomBladeZero), I tried to find out. From a mobile-centric market of the 2010s, China is emerging as a leading producer of action games, thanks largely to 2024's breakout hit, Black Myth: Wukong. Now, with games like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Tides of Annihilation, Where Winds Meet, and Blood Message, China is clearly looking to establish itself in the AAA space, with many of their games drawing on their country's rich history and culture. Journey with me from a spectacular blast furnace in Beijing, the setting for S-Party and my interview with S-Game's founder, Soulframe, to a state-of-the-art mocap studio in Shanghai as we reveal how China is about to shake up the gaming landscape. 00:00 - Black Myth: Wukong changes the game 01:39 - Phantom Blade Zero's director, Soulframe 04:18 - Openness of Chinese developers 05:11 - Upcoming Chinese action games 07:56 - PC gaming is huge in China 09:18 - Drawing on China's history and culture 10:17 - The history of China's videogame industry 13:52 - Phantom Blade's state-of-the-art motion capture 15:36 - Chinese censorship in games 18:05 - Big games are not inherently good https://www.pcgamer.com #phantombladezero #blackmyth #china #pcgaming #pcgamer #wuchangfallenfeathers #tidesofannihilation #bloodmessage #wherewindsmeet X: https://x.com/pcgamer TikTok: / pcgamer_mag Instagram: / pcgamer_mag Facebook: / pcgamermagazine Forum: https://forums.pcgamer.com/ To subscribe to the magazine in the US, UK, or elsewhere, visit magazines direct.
