0:00 Intro 0:10 Part I: Leaf Litter Collection 0:50 Materials 1:30 Collecting 5:06 Part II: Treating your Leaves 5:43 Heat Treating the Leaves 6:24 Applying Leaf Litter to Bug Bins 6:40 Outro In this video I go over how to 1) collect leaf litter, and 2) prepare leaf litter (i.e., sterilize). The basic steps are to go to a forest, collect leaves, take them home, then treat them under heat at 250°F or 120°C in an oven for a few hours (or until completely dry). For larger pieces of bark or wood you will need to bake for longer because the heat needs to penetrate the entire volume of the material. I use this leaf litter/bark in all my bug bins (e.g., isopods, springtails, tarantulas, slugs). This is the way I always do it, however, you could also boil your leaves. The only downside to that is you cannot do lots at once (unless you have a huge pot), and the material is wet after, meaning that there's a greater chance for your stuff to mold in storage.
