I patiently filmed this cicada from the moment it started splitting its nymph shell until it fully emerged as a beautiful winged adult — the entire real-time process took 43 minutes. I then sped up the footage 10x to create this mesmerizing 4-minute time lapse showing every detail: the crack opening, pulling itself free, wings slowly expanding, and the pale teneral stage before it hardens and darkens. Cicadas spend years underground as nymphs, then climb out at night for this final molt into their singing adult form. This one has clear wings and that ghostly greenish look right after emerging — completely harmless and incredible to witness up close! Filmed handheld/nighttime on a tree trunk.
