Solo Hiking the 110km Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay to The Twelve Apostles in southern coastal Victoria, Australia. Nature's drama unfolds at every step as you walk parallel to the Great Ocean Road passing through Victoria's (Australia) iconic Great Otway and Port Campbell national parks. Weave your way through tall forests, coastal heathlands, beside wild rocky shores and along windswept cliff-tops presenting amazing views. 8 days and 7 nights covering approximately 100km solo hike from Apollo Bay to The 12 Apostles then back to Princetown an extra 7km to final accommodation stop to be picked up by bus the following day following the Great Ocean Road back to Apollo Bay. From Darwin it was a flight to Melbourne Airport, Airport bus to Ibis Styles King Street accommodation then Geelong train, Bus to Apollo Bay. Day 1- I took the inland route . The trailhead begins at Apollo Bay Visitor Information Centre following Apollo Bay's foreshore and beyond, passing beside the sweeping beach of Mounts Bay to pass directly through the Marengo Holiday Park and emerge out the back onto the Walk. It passes a rural setting of farmland, occasionally dropping onto the beach before crossing Bald Hill and reaching the Three Creeks Beach. The Walk climbs through coastal forest to another track junction to Shelley Beach Picnic Area. It is a short walk down to the mouth of the Elliot River where you cross using stepping stones before a steady climb up the Elliot River Track to the GOW's Elliot Ridge hike-in campground. Day 2 Today takes you through the magnificent forests of the Great Otway National Park and turn right at Blanket Bay Track. before descending into Blanket Bay Campground, everyone's favourite campground. A little hop across Blanket Bay Creek. Day 3 Today takes you through the heathland of the Great Otway National Park. A river crossing is required, shoes off. From Parker Inlet ascend the 300+ stone steps up the old tramway route and veer left at the information board to go to Point Franklin. We continue along the cliff-tops passing above the beautiful Crayfish Bay to finally arrive at the Cape Otway Lightstation. Enter the Lightstation for lunch and look around the old telegraph house. A short way in a turn to the right into the Cape Otway hike-in campground. Echidna, finches and other birds living in and around the campground. Day 4 From Cape Otway campground we return to the main track and turn right, proceeding towards the Cape Otway Cemetery for an interesting visit to the graves of lightkeeper's families and shipwrecked sailors. Down the wooden steps onto Station Beach for about 4 kilometres of deep sand walking. Up off the beach up the stairs of rocks to the escarpment lookout over Aire River mouth before descending down to the sandy 4WD track and across the wooden bridge over Aire River, through the Aire River West campground and up the steps to the GOW Campground up on the hill. Day 5 From the Aire River campground the track follows the cliff-top Castle Cove and the traffic of the Great Ocean Road. Grea views of Castle Cove from both sides. From Castle Cove Lookout the track winds along cliff-tops. After leaving the boardwalk the track winds its way through eucalypt woodland and grass trees before descending to the mouth of the un-bridged Browns Creek. It is a 2 km walk along Johanna Beach, crossing the creek before reaching the Johanna Beach Campground. Day 6 Upon leaving Johanna Beach campground we quickly come to a walk up hill along Old Coach Road through the gate and kangaroos on the hill. After the beach section its a steep staircase ascents and descents to Devils Kitchen Day 7 Devils Kitchen To Ryans Den The high coastal cliffs of Moonlight Head. Wreck Beach at low tide with its rusting shipwreck anchors from the Marie Gabrielle and Fiji. Day 8 walk starts on a west walk towards the track junction then a right turn towards Rivernook and Gellibrand River Car Park. The walk meanders passing Cat Reef and Pebble Point to Rivernook. Approaching Princetown the track descends onto a sandy track at the estuary. Turn right following the Gellibrand River as it leads back onto Old Coach Road, passing the Princetown Recreation Reserve and crossing the Gellibrand River's bridge which is being rebuilt. A sharp left turn once past the bridge and a Great Ocean Walk information board near the boat ramp and bridge flags the walk entry point. traversing cliff-tops and undulating dunes above Clinton Beach to finally reach the 12 Apostles. Pass above Gibson Steps and through the car park and walk the last 800metres to end at the Twelve Apostles Information Centre and car park.
