Connie and Clive made their first appearance together this morning on the nest. Connie brought in the first stick which took her quite some time to get there flying left and right in front of the nest until she landed on the left branch. Clive arrived seconds before to greet her when she landed. All that work and Connie lets the stick fall. You can see Clive wonder where it went. Together they do some nest work and then leave one right after the other. They both seem quite comfy with each other. They must have had a good summer vacation. 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞: Sorry typo error on the intro date. Should read 2022-09-24 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚/𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚 Captiva Island, Florida is off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida. The nest is on private property and not accessible to the public. ✿ Connie is the resident female eagle and I estimated to be 18/20 years old as of 2023 but could be older ✿ Clive in my estimate is 6/7 years old as of 2022 based on his plumage when he arrived and his inexperience but that is only a guess 🌸 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦: 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑: https://forum.hancockwildlife.org/vie... 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐬𝐭: The Resident Female Eagle (Connie) and her former mate (Joe) first showed up in 2009 and took over the nest which used to be an osprey nest. Between her and her former mate, the nest has been successful in fledging numerous eaglets. Tragedy struck the nest in early 2021 when both eaglets passed away from rodenticide and her long-time mate Joe got into a territorial battle. Joe was injured in the battle and disappeared after. As to what became of him, we do not know. Since Joe's disappearance, two male eagles have won Connie's attention. Martin: The first male was Martin who came after Joe's disappearance and returned with Connie for the 2021-2022 nesting season. Unfortunately, Martin was challenged shortly after their return by another male eagle and lost out to that Eagle. We can only hope Martin left the area and was not killed in the battle. Clive: The second male was the winner of the battle with Martin and was eventually named Clive. Though it took a bit, he finally won Connie's heart and is now the Resident Male at the nest. Their first season together (2021-2022) was unsuccessful even though two eggs were laid. Speculation was that the eggs were not fertilized due to the short time Connie and Clive had together before the eggs were laid.
