Geisha Dance for Setsubun at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto 節分

Setsubun is an old Japanese tradition where Japanese greet the spring on February 3rd. One of the main activities is throwing beans to ward off evil and bring in good luck. At temples and shrines many rituals and performances are held. At Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Geisha apprentices known as Maiko dance and later throw beans to gather crowds on February 2nd and 3rd. This year the second performance was during a snow shower so it really added to the spectacle. I plan to do a longer version of the second performance focusing on the beauty of the snow and the dancing. #japan #節分 #geisha
