Should I learn Flash or Silverlight? Sliverlight is primarily limited to Microsoft systems. Flash is more widely used. Flash is blocked on a lot of Microsoft systems. They changed that in Windows 8. Only blacklisted sites are still blocked now. I didn't hear that Flash was allowed in the latest Windows or IE versions. You know it is bad when Microsoft abandoned its own Silverlight to run Flash animations in IE 10. And that's on top of Netflix dumping it a year or two ago, though Sliverlight seems to have been around forever. Microsoft released Silverlight around 2007. Given the fact that Microsoft has ceded its defeat to Flash sites, you should learn Flash. Why wasn't Flash more commonly used? Microsoft couldn't have been the biggest impediment, though that is a major hurdle. Flash took so long to get updates out to users that a developer couldn't create sites with the latest Flash version for a year or two after it got out. Conversely, Windows updated everyone at the same time. At least it sounds like Silverlight is dead. It's about as dead as Flex. What is Flex? Flex was a Silverlight and Flash rival that came out in the mid-2000s before Sliverlight and Flash beat it. Does anyone still use Silverlight? Sure, people who built their sites in it in the first place. Some are keeping it, because Silverlight plays well with .Net. Of course it does; they were both developed by Microsoft. There are plenty of Microsoft users who'd love to set you straight on the assumption that MS tools always play well together. I heard there was another rival to Silverlight and Flash. There are places where HTML5 is replacing Silverlight. I've heard arguments that HTML5 is replacing everything. HMTL5 can do a lot, but it can't do everything yet. But if you're going to learn one streaming media delivery method, learn Flash. Yeah, HTML needs another iteration before it replaces everything else I might need to know it.
