¡Feliz día del charango! (version en español más abajo) Today, april 6th of 2025, is the 26th International Day of the Charango. It was initiated in 1999 by the Bolivian Charango Society (BCS), and to celebrate this event I would like to share a recording of a piece by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) that I recently transcribed for charango. It’s a Sarabande that was originally composed in B minor for unaccompanied violin in 1720. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Sarabande was a very popular dance, but the moralists of the time considered it an obscene and despicable dance, and in 1583 it was banned in Spain for being "a dance and song so loose in its words and so ugly in its motions that it is enough to excite bad emotions in even very decent people" (J. de Mariana, 1609). However, in the 17th century it spread to Italy and France, where it turned into a slow court dance. In the baroque period, composers like Bach wrote suites of dance music that typically included a Sarabande. During Bach's lifetime, his works for solo violin were comparatively unknown until the famous violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) began to perform these works. Today, these works are an essential part of the violin and guitar repertoire and are frequently performed and recorded. Fifty years ago, jazz fusion guitarist Al Di Meola (1954-...) recorded Bach's Sarabande in B minor (BWV 1002) on the guitar and released it on his debut album “Land of the Midnight Sun” (1976)    • Sarabande From Violin Sonata In B Minor  . For this video I recorded the piece on my baritone charango, also called roncoco or charangón, built by Peruvian luthier Justo Baca Sotomayor. I changed a few details to transfer the original music to the charango, but the melody and harmonies are basically still the same. Instead of the original key of B minor, on the charangón the Sarabande will be heard in E minor. However, the score is written in A minor and the pieces can also be played on a common charango tuned in A minor7 (gg,cc,eE,aa,ee). Btw., did you hear about the latest news from Peru? Last week, I learned that the Peruvian congress recently approved a new law (law N° 32274) which declares the 10th of February the official day of the Peruvian charango. the date was chosen in honor of the birth of Jaime Guardia (1933-2018), an outstanding charango player and composer from Ayacucho (Peru). Fue iniciado en 1999 por la Sociedad Boliviana del Charango (BCS), y para celebrar este evento me gustaría compartir una grabación de una pieza de J.S. Bach (1685-1750) que recientemente transcribí para charango. Se trata de una zarabanda compuesta originalmente en si menor para violín solo en 1720. En los siglos XVI y XVII la zarabanda era una danza muy popular, pero los moralistas de la época la consideraban un baile obsceno y despreciable, y en 1583 se prohibió en España por ser «un baile y cantar tan lascivo en las palabras, tan feo en los meneos, que basta para pegar fuego aun á las personas muy honestas.» (J. de Mariana, 1609). Sin embargo, en el siglo XVII se extendió a Italia y Francia, donde se convirtió en un baile lento de corte. En la época barroca, compositores como Bach escribieron suites de música de danza que solían incluir una zarabanda. En la época de Bach, sus obras para violín solo fueron relativamente desconocidas hasta que el famoso violinista Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) comenzó a interpretarlas. Hoy en día, estas obras forman parte esencial del repertorio para violín y guitarra y se interpretan y graban con frecuencia. Para este video grabé la pieza en mi charango barítono, también llamado roncoco o charangón, construido por el luthier peruano Justo Baca Sotomayor. Cambié algunos detalles para adaptar la música original al charango, pero la melodía y las armonías siguen siendo básicamente las mismas. En vez de la tonalidad original de Si menor, en el charangón la Sarabande se escuchará en Mi menor. Sin embargo, la partitura está escrita en La menor y las piezas también se pueden tocar en un charango común afinado en La menor7 (gg,cc,eE,aa,ee). Una cosa más, ¿os habéis enterado de las últimas noticias de Perú? La semana pasada me enteré de que el congreso peruano recién aprobó una nueva ley (la ley N° 32274) que oficialmente declara el 10 de febrero como el «Día del Charango Peruano». La fecha fue elegida en honor al nacimiento de Jaime Guardia (1933-2018), un destacado charanguista y compositor de Ayacucho (Perú).
