This webinar explores how to use the languages pupils know in mainstream classrooms to enhance learning and develop inclusive environments. Linguistic and cultural diversity are a reality in many international schools, and recognising the role of teachers in valuing students' languages is key to inclusion for students who use English as an Additional Language (EAL). But how do we go about bringing other languages into classrooms effectively? How can a teacher manage to support students using 10 different languages? This practical session looks at a framework for multilingual pedagogy (often called translanguaging) and how to think through opportunities for multilingual engagement and then make them a reality. The session also discusses some of the main challenges to developing a linguistically inclusive classroom, and ways to work through these. Biography: Eowyn Crisfield is a Canadian-educated specialist in languages across the curriculum, including EAL, home languages, bilingual and immersion education, super-diverse schools and translanguaging. Her focus is on equal access to learning and language development for all students and on enhancing approaches to linguistic diversity in schools. Eowyn is author of ‘Bilingual Families: A practical language planning guide’ (2021) and co-author of ’Linguistic and Cultural Innovation in Schools: The Languages Challenge’ (2018 with Jane Spiro). Eowyn is also a Senior Lecturer in English Language and TESOL at Oxford Brookes University and an Executive member of NALDIC.
