"Black rhinos are very nervous in temperament and can be quite aggressive and would react by attacking the threat...White rhino are more gregarious, more calm. They respond to threats by just running away." https://wwf.panda.org/discover/knowle... how to tell black and white rhinos apart: black rhinos are browsers (eat leaves off bushes), smaller body and forehead (ears to horn), have beak-like upper lips, feathery ears, sloping backs, and the babies usually follow the mama white rhinos are grazers (eat grass), larger body and longer forehead (ears to horn), have flat lips, and the mamas usually follow the babies "Black rhinos have communal dung piles called “middens” which are message stations for other rhinos. A rhino will sniff the pile deeply, shuffle through it, then defecate in the same spot. Most of the time, the animal will also wildly fling the dung around with its back feet, to be sure its own feces carry the primary message, and to be sure its scent is then spread every time they take a step." https://rhinos.org/blog/the-science-o... Tips from my trip: Hands down, the BEST safari company in Kenya! Staying with Kicheche (Laikipia Ol Pejeta and Valley Camp, Maasai Mara) is my favorite safari experience of all time! Other places claim ‘luxury’ experiences, this one actually delivers! The lodging, food, service, location, and animal diversity and density are all amazing and make Kicheche camps your best investment. Kicheche Laikipia Ol Pejeta rocks! Every aspect of the camp and service was extremely thoughtful without being or trying to be pretentious like other lodges/camps. The food, to include the packed breakfasts and sundowners, was consistently good and diverse. Chef Mike was respectful of dietary accommodations, wowed me with flavor, and plated beautiful and well-cooked food. Lunch is served with an exclusive view of the lake where the elephants come to drink and wallow in mud. I stayed 4 nights, but wish I had done longer. Shoutout to my guide, Peter - he has great insight and sight, like most guides do, and he found some really magical moments for us to enjoy. But I really appreciated his willingness to sit for hours in a single spot. Other guides, at other lodges/camps that I’ve experienced, get fidgety or pushy to move on to see something else in quick succession. I don’t go on safari to check boxes. I take more video than pictures, and like to just sit and watch nature do its thing. And this time I got to return to a lion kill and a hyena den a few days in a row – very cool! I really like the ‘Ugly 5’ and am not disappointed if I don’t see the ‘Big 5’ – for me, it’s all about what they’re doing, and waiting to see what might happen when you’re patient. So having a good guide, like Peter, who respects that and marvels in what we experience makes all the difference. Highly recommend requesting him as your guide.
