The Raptor line from Motiv is officially back. These bird bearing balls used to highlight the top end of Motiv’s lineup, and this most recent release, the Sky raptor takes that into the new generation of Motiv’s technology. this piece feature the low rg, high differential affliction vs symmetric core which was most recently featured in the EJ Tackett signature VIP balls, this time wrapped in the all new Dynamic Infusion Pearl Reactive cover stock formula. And as they do on most pieces, Motiv is advertising that this is the most angular piece you can buy on the market today, which has turned into their sort of calling card. As this has become more cliche saying the same thing about all the releases, I was really curious how this piece would actually perform rather than just taking their word for it. With that, we put a little bit of a stronger layout on the ball as I tend to personally match up better high differential balls when they roll sooner and I wanted to give the sky raptor the best chance I could. And on the lanes, the performance shined through pretty quickly. The ball is definitely very clean through the fronts and mids. The exceptionally high gloss finish on this pearl coverstock does a great job getting through just about everything it has to and doesn’t over react once it sees friction. So long as I fed the Sky raptor into the zone where the cover could match up with the lane surface enough to get into a good roll, it struck basically every time. If I missed inside or in the oil, the hydroplaning began, at best leaving a 2 pin, if not something much less makeable. The shape unsurprisingly reminded me of the 900 global zen. This high differential strong pearl combination seems to be dominating the house shot game these days and along side a strong asymmetric hybrid, gives most bowlers a great 1-2 punch in their arsenal. But let’s not be mistaken. This probably wouldn’t be the first ball out of my bag on fresh oil. It’s definitely built for higher friction scenarios as my miss room inside on this fresh house shot was basically zero and if I’m on a house shot, I want something that will give me the maximum room possible. Later in the day of league or tournament block, I think the sky raptor will be much better suited to match up and open the pocket up from deep inside. So with that, I have a couple types of bowlers that come to mind that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is actually bowlers like myself with a higher rev rate and lower axis tilt. I tend to struggle getting the ball through the fronts, but this cover has no issue with that, and the strong core dynamics allow me open up my angles and still trust that it will get back to the pocket. The second is the traditional stroker type bowler with limited axis rotation. The overall strength is almost sure to keep them where they want to be on the lane, and the core will walk the ball into the pocket for them, rather than having them force it there. In short, the new Motiv Sky Raptor is ready to take your scores to new heights. Thank you to Weston Lanes for allowing us to film this video: www.westonlanes.com www.bowlersparadise.com
