(6 May 1995) T.I. 10:47:32 In the largest gathering of heads of state in London for decades, the Queen Mother and Prime Minister, John Major, opened ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Thousands sweltered in the heat while watching the military march-past and parachute drop. Britain's Queen Mother presided over the ceremonies: "I do hope that all those who go to the many ceremonies arranged, will remember with pride and gratitude those men and women, armed and unarmed, whose courage really helped to bring us to victory. God bless them all," she said. John Major paid tribute to Queen Mother Elizabeth: "The history of our country will always remember with admiration your own determination and that of the King, (George VI) who remained in London throughout the darkest days of the war," he said. The Prime Minister paid homage to the 20,000 people who died on average each day of the war's duration: "Today, above all, we give thanks for the quiet bravery and decency for those men and women who defeated a tyranny beyond imagination, and in so doing, enabled future generations to enjoy the blessings of freedom, democracy and peace," Major said. "It is our responsibility to keep faith with those who fought to prevent future wars," he added.
