What is Hirsutism? Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

BEARDED WOMAN - HIRSUTISM : Facial Hair In Women I Hirsutism Symtoms& Causes & Natural Treatment Welcome To Daily Dose of Medicine Hirsutism is defined as the presence of terminal coarse hairs in females in a male-like distribution. It affects around 5-10% of women. Classically, hirsutism has been considered a marker of increased androgen levels in females. From increased production of androgens (i.e testosterone) either by the adrenals or due to an ovarian disease. Hirsuate women usually present with increased growth of terminal hair at sides of the face, upper lip, chin, upper back, shoulders, sternum, and upper abdomen. HIRSUTISM SYMPTOMS When high androgen levels cause hirsutism, other signs might develop over time, a process called virilization. Signs of virilization might include: Deepening voice Balding Acne Decreased breast size Increased muscle mass Enlargement of the clitoris Causes 1-Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) 2-Cushing syndrome 3-Congenital adrenal hyperplasia 4- Tumors 5- Medications Risk factors Several factors can influence your likelihood of developing hirsutism, including: Family history. Several conditions that cause hirsutism, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and polycystic ovary syndrome, run in families. Ancestry. Women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian ancestry are more likely to have more body hair with no identifiable cause than are other women. Obesity. Being obese causes increased androgen production, which can worsen hirsutism. How can hirsutism be prevented? It is not yet possible to prevent genetically predetermined excessive hair growth. Insulin resistance associated with obesity can be reduced by weight loss and dietary control. Can hirsutism be cured permanently? Hirsutism is a common disorder that usually can be treated successfully with medication. Following medical treatment, electrolysis or laser treatment can be used to permanently reduce or remove any remaining unwanted hair. Hirsutism natural treatment Spearmint tea (Mentha spicata), 1 cup, 2 times per day. A preliminary study found that women with hirsutism who drank spearmint tea had less free testosterone (a male hormone) in their blood. The researchers thought the tea might reduce symptoms of mild hirsutism. What causes hirsutism in females? Hirsutism is caused by an excess production or action of hormones called androgens, secreted by the ovaries or adrenal glands and produced locally in the hair follicle. Several different conditions can lead to hirsutism. Hirsutism, from the Latin word hisutus meaning shaggy, rough & bristly, is a common disorder, affecting up to 10% of U.S. women, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. It can be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can also be associated with infertility. Does hirsutism always mean PCOS? Facial hair growth by itself does not indicate that you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), though hirsutism (unwanted or excess body hair) is one of the most distressing symptoms of PCOS. In some cases, the exact cause of facial hair in women is never known and the condition often runs in families. How can a woman reduce androgens? To help decrease the effects of PCOS, try to: Maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss can reduce insulin and androgen levels and may restore ovulation. Limit carbohydrates. Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets might increase insulin levels. Be active. Exercise helps lower blood sugar levels. What causes high androgens in females? In healthy women, the ovaries and adrenal glands produce about 40% to 50% of the body's testosterone. Tumors of the ovaries and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can both cause too much androgen production. Is PCOS hirsutism reversible? Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a cause of infertility, is the most common cause of hirsutism. Hirsutism is a common disorder, affecting up to 10 percent of women in the United States. How can I balance my hormones and reduce facial hair? Maintaining a healthy weight may correct your level of androgens without the use of medication. You may need medical treatment if excessive hair growth is a symptom of PCOS or adrenal disorders. Drug therapy in the form of birth control pills and antiandrogen medications can help balance your hormone levels. Does plucking chin hair make it grow more? The researchers found plucking was able to stimulate hairs to grow back, sometimes more than were there originally, but only after a certain threshold. How can I stop chin hair growth? Options for getting rid of chin hair include: tweezing. shaving. waxing at home or by a professional. professional threading. professional sugaring. Does hirsutism go away? Hairs will grow slower and become finer, but they won't go away," he says. As a result, he recommends waxing, laser treatment or electrolysis to further inhibit hair growth.
