#exercise #observation #meditation #minimalism #slowingdown #composition 🏞️ Exercise: How to? Watch these two landscapes for a few minutes and see whether they move or not. In this exercise, I want you to focus on Structure and Pattern. Two landscapes. Both feature a section of crop with a distinct colour and pattern. The first features a patch of young corn in a soft and quiet evening light. The second landscape shows barley in the final stage of ripening, swaying in a light summer breeze. How much of the landscape and how much of the sky can you see? Below, large, clearly recognisable details fade quickly into small dots and a beautiful, jagged line as they transition into the light green field. The first landscape is easier to take in as there is a dominant backdrop to the left in the form of a grove and its shadow across the field. However, the second landscape requires more attention to detail to appreciate the patterns and textures within the frame. Again, there are detailed close-ups of the ears of barley and circles of wind, and the heads of the barley sometimes hang in the breeze. They fade further away and move slowly along in the summer breeze. If you watch closely, you will notice the pattern and structure of the visible part of the crop. These patterns and structures are mainly formed by the human action of seeding. What is now sown by machine used to be spread out by hand in the old days. You can certainly see this with the corn if you stand in the middle of it, but this requires a different perspective. 🧘 Inspirational thought Once you recognise an initial pattern, you see it recurring in other places as well. Regularly irregular. At the same time, you notice that the wind's movement strengthens rather than disturbs the silence and tranquillity. To be continued… 🌿 Context This landscape, one of two featured in the video, is a 'cultural' landscape, reflecting how people have shaped nature to their liking over the centuries. My video diaries increasingly focus on building a collection of these cultural landscapes, exploring different aspects of observation and contemplation. I am developing a collection of unique spots / views that together tell a story and capture the essence of this place in the French Gaume region of Grand Est. First, observe these landscapes closely and precisely, twice if necessary. Open up and embrace the power and beauty of the landscape. It's like taking a breath: in and out. Observe the landscape, practising stopping your thoughts and letting go of expectations and judgements. Simply be with yourself. You can achieve meditation through observation when you find a way in and be 'with' the landscape. 🗺️ Filmed In: Pays de Montmédy and Gaume, in the Lorraine region of France 🕰️ Chapters 00:12 – Opening monologue about observation of Landscape 1 04:40 – Landscape 2 08:30 – Instructions for the exercise 💬 Like this video?
