Main highlights of Meme Twiifekeni and Tate Mapele's Wedding 29-30 September 2018. This is a typical Oshiwambo Modern wedding, which is a mixture of western religion and Oshiwambo cultural practices. Since this is a Christian type of wedding mixed with Oshiwambo tradition. People are allowed to dress traditional attires in church and ululate to celebrate the matrimony. After church people normally go first to a mini reception called Ombao (calabash) which is hosted by close relatives of the bride before proceeding to the main reception at the residence of the bride's parents. This can take about 4 to 5 hours to finish both the mini reception and the main one. This implies that if the church services which normally starts from 9h00 am or 10h00 am usually get done by 12h00 or 12h30 by the time all receptions are done it will be 18h00 or 19h00. When the party is finished, the groom will travel back to his parents residence and leave the bride (omufuko womukavona) behind. For this reason most of the weddings that are taking place in the north they take 2 days to be done to be exact. On day two the groom (omufuko womumati) with his best men and great women (called oinghumbi) have to travel back to the residence of the bride' parents to go and collect her. And if there is a mini reception again to be hosted by relatives of the groom, then the people from both sides will go there before they return to the residence of the groom's parents for another main reception which is final. At all mini receptions and main receptions, will gather under a specified tree within the mahangu field, usually not very far from the homestead. The master of ceremonies welcomes people and invites someone to make a prayer. After a prayer and a religious song, the MC will inform people to get ready to present gifts to the newly wed couples. These gifts range from cash to baskets or clay pots. After the gift session people will proceed to a big tent usually erected to fit between 250 to 300 people. As a courtesy nobody is expected to show an invitation card at the entrance, all people who turned up should just enter and get foods and drinks. Western foods dominate a lot of wedding in north Namibia although traditional cuisine is also made available. Let me also explain that there is a culture of women performing traditional dances with horse tails. These tails should just be carried by women especially adults to add value to the celebration. It has nothing to do with witchcraft as some people who do not understand its purpose use to say. Women also wear homemade bracelets around their ankles which can make beautiful sounds when the dance. Sometimes they collect bottle caps/tops of soft drinks or beer to make them. People can beat drums, blow whistles and ululate at Oshiwambo weddings.
