Wilhelm Keitel was one of Adolf Hitler’s most loyal commanders—an obedient field marshal whose decisions shaped some of the darkest chapters of the Second World War. Born into a military family, Keitel rose through the ranks of the Reichswehr and later became Chief of the Armed Forces High Command, placing him directly at Hitler’s side. His unwavering obedience earned him the reputation of being Hitler’s “yes-man,” a man who signed criminal orders without hesitation and helped transform Nazi ideology into murderous policy. From the invasion of Poland to the planning of Operation Barbarossa, Keitel approved directives that enabled mass executions, reprisals against civilians, the persecution of Jews, and the brutal suppression of resistance movements across Europe. His signature appeared on the infamous “Night and Fog” decree, the “Commissar Order,” and the “Commando Order”—all tools of terror used by Nazi Germany to eliminate anyone deemed a threat. After the failure of the July 20 assassination attempt, Keitel remained fiercely loyal to Hitler, helping oversee purges that led to thousands of executions. Yet when Germany collapsed, the same loyalty he once proudly displayed could no longer save him. Arrested by the Allies, Keitel stood before the Nuremberg Tribunal, where he was convicted for war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity. His execution on October 16, 1946, was slow and agonizing—a grim end for a man who enabled so much suffering. This documentary explores Keitel’s rise, his role in Nazi decision-making, and how blind loyalty turned him into one of history’s most notorious military criminals.
