He was awarded in 1983 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in the mathematical sciences category. He is a Fellow of all Indian Science Academies: The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) and Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Number 9 - Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893-1972): Fondly referred to as the "father of Indian statistics," Mahalanobis was a visionary statistician who played a pivotal role in developing statistical sampling techniques. His establishment of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) laid the groundwork for the systematic study and application of statistics in India. Number 8 - Bhaskara II Bhaskara II (1114-1185 CE), was a preeminent mathematician and astronomer of medieval India. His treatises, such as "Lilavati" covered topics ranging from algebra, arithmetic, and calculus to geometry and trigonometry, showcasing the advanced mathematical knowledge prevalent in ancient India. Number 7 - Harish-Chandra (1923-1983): A distinguished mathematician known for his work in harmonic analysis and representation theory, Harish-Chandra's research on Lie groups and Lie algebras has had a profound impact on modern mathematics and theoretical physics. Number 6 - Manjul Bhargava (b. 1974): A modern-day mathematical prodigy, Manjul Bhargava is celebrated for his outstanding research in number theory and representation theory. At a young age, Bhargava received critical acclaim for his groundbreaking doctoral thesis, and he later went on to be awarded the Fields Medal for his profound contributions to mathematics. Number 5 - C. R. Rao (1920-2021): Renowned for his remarkable contributions to statistical theory and methodology, C. R. Rao's work in multivariate analysis, experimental design, and estimation theory has significantly influenced modern statistics. His pioneering efforts led to the establishment of the Indian Statistical Institute, which continues to foster research and advancements in statistical sciences. Number 4 - Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-1974): While Bose's initial training was in physics, his collaboration with Albert Einstein led to the development of Bose-Einstein statistics and the concept of Bose-Einstein condensate. This groundbreaking work revolutionized the field of quantum mechanics and solidified Bose's position as a prominent mathematician and physicist. Number 3 - Brahmagupta Brahmagupta (c. 598 – c. 668 CE) was an Indian mathematician and astronomer. Brahmagupta was the first to give rules for computing with zero. He is known for Brahmagupta's theorem, Brahmagupta's identity, Brahmagupta's problem, Brahmagupta–Fibonacci identity, Brahmagupta's interpolation formula and Brahmagupta's formula. Number 2 - Aryabhata (476-550 CE): Considered one of ancient India's foremost mathematicians and astronomers, Aryabhata made significant contributions to algebra, trigonometry, and the concept of zero. His magnum opus, "Aryabhatiya," provided a comprehensive understanding of arithmetic and trigonometric functions, laying the foundation for advanced mathematical studies in India. Number 1 - Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920): Often hailed as a mathematical prodigy, Srinivasa Ramanujan's life story is a testament to the power of innate talent and determination. Born in a small town in South India, Ramanujan's fascination with numbers led him to make groundbreaking discoveries in number theory, infinite series, and modular forms. With minimal formal education, he independently derived complex theorems and identities that astonished even the most eminent mathematicians of his time. His collaboration with British mathematician G.H.
