Artist Name: Portrait XO Title: Boundaries of Agency Date: February 9 Time: 4:30 PM EST We are excited to introduce the first artist in our upcoming artist talk series, presented through a collaboration between the Digital Media Program and MUTEK: Portrait XO. The event will begin with a short introduction to the MUTEK festival by founder and director Alain Mongeau, followed by Portrait XO’s talk Boundaries of Agency. Everyone is welcome! Abstract: Portrait XO presents "Boundaries of Agency," a two-part interactive installation and spatial performance created during the ZKM/Hellerau Global Sonic Research Residency. She discusses the process of using AI voice cloning to create an embodied experience that confronts audiences with questions of consent, ownership, and vulnerability. She examines the creative process and the urgent call for protecting voice as unregulated biometric data. Artist Bio: Portrait XO (she/they) is a transdisciplinary artist, musician, independent researcher, and data activist working at the intersection of sound, AI, and ecological futures. Recipient of the first German human-AI Jazzki Award by ELBJAZZ (2023), her research-driven performances and installations have been supported by international residencies and festivals such as MUTEK, CTM, and Ars Electronica. She is the founder of SOUND OBSESSED, a community for hybrid artists exploring computational creativity. Her practice explores the entanglement of AI and human creativity—who we become, what we owe each other, and what gets lost or transformed in the exchange.
