One Photo Deep Dive :: Steichen Aerial Bombing

I found a great photograph for a "one photo deep dive" as we haven't done one of these in a while. This image was made somewhere between 1917 and 1920 and is credited to The US Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, Photographic Section under the command of Major Edward J Steichen. We don't know if Steichen actually made this image or if it was someone in his section. Steichen served in the Army during World War I and in the Navy during World War II. He was brought in to oversee the photography efforts. To this point, military photography had been very documentation oriented with objective images of things like planes or ships. Steichen had a commercial and artistic background which was desired to move military photography into a more publicly acceptable form. This included propaganda based photographs mostly of troops performing their duties. This photograph is none of these, which is why it stands out. We have a dramatic, deadly image that's dark in both appearance and in content. It shows a brutal aspect of war in the form of a dramatic airstrike that also details anti-aircraft munitions as detailed in the description. This image was purchased as part of the recently acquired group of images from the Thomas Walther collection purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This work was acquired in 2001 and is currently on display with the other images obtained in the 300 purchased. Like this video?
