An Honest Explanation of the Sierra leone Civil War.- Full Documentary The war that destroyed Sierra Leone (1991–2002) was caused by a combination of political corruption, economic collapse, and regional instability. After independence in 1961, Sierra Leone fell under decades of misrule, where successive governments, especially under Siaka Stevens and Joseph Momoh, weakened state institutions, enriched elites, and ignored the needs of ordinary citizens. The discovery of diamonds, instead of benefiting the nation, fueled greed and corruption, leaving the majority in poverty while political leaders and foreign companies profited. By the late 1980s, unemployment, poor education, and lack of opportunities left many young people disillusioned. The Revolutionary United Front (RUF), led by Foday Sankoh and supported initially by Charles Taylor from neighboring Liberia, exploited these grievances. They promised liberation from corrupt rulers but instead waged a brutal campaign marked by terror, forced recruitment of child soldiers, mass killings, and amputations. The collapse of governance meant the state could not defend itself, and the diamond trade financed both the rebels and corrupt officials, prolonging the conflict. Regional wars in Liberia and instability in West Africa further worsened the crisis. Ultimately, Sierra Leone’s war was driven by greed for diamonds, corrupt leadership, and the desperation of an abandoned population. #sierraleonecivilwar #sierraleone #sierraleonewar #sierraleonepolice
