Today we are off to Port Renfrew, BC located in the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation. We are Scott and Steph and we love to travel Vancouver Island in our converted Ford Transit 250 van with our Boston Terrier named Google. It's a beautiful 2 hours drive along the southwest coast when you are driving from Victoria. PR can also be accessed through Lake Cowichan off Hwy 18 if you are coming from the mid eastern side of Vancouver Island. Full disclosure the route from Lake Cowichan is less bumps and humps. Camp/Stay - The Pacheedaht First Nation offers breathtaking campsites on the mouth of the Gordon River AND San Juan River Estuaries. Plus beach front. They also have showers, full service washrooms and laundry facilities. https://www.visitpacheedaht.ca/ If you are not interested in camping there are other accommodation. The most well known is Wild Renfrew, here you can experience oceanfront living in their cozy cottages with stunning views. There is also Handsome Dans, the hiker huts, different fishing tour lodges and of course Air B&Bs. DJI Mini 4K DRONE FOOTAGE (RELAXING MUSIC) EAT - Our favorite spot to eat is the Renfrew Pub. This pub and restaurant is located right on the waterfront next to the dock. It offers up micro-brews, tasty fare, and a west coast nautical charm. The food and drinks are fantastic so we highly recommend this spot and kids are welcome so the whole family can enjoy it. Port Renfrew also has other options for food. There is the Coastal Kitchen, Haliwoods Fish N Chips, Tomi's, a pizza place and of course they do have a grocery store called the San Juan market that is open 11-7 most days if you are like us and prefer to cook most of your own meals. Play - Besides hiking the West Coast Trail, Port Renfrew is also a premier destination for anglers seeking world class fishing adventures. Located on the entrance to the Juan De Fuca Strait and Swiftsure Bank, that provide abundant opportunities to catch chinook, coho, pink and sockeye a=salmon plus halibut, ling cod and rock fish. If you are looking for a more land based activity then we recommend visiting Botanical Beach. It is known for it's unique landscape that can only been seen during low tide. If you had to Port Renfrew then a must see is the famous bonsai tree in Fairy Lake! Then there is Big Lonely Doug is one of Canada's most famous trees — and it's got a powerful story. Standing 70 meters (230 feet) tall and estimated to be over 1,000 years old, this is Canada's second largest Douglas-fir tree. Lonely Doug towers alone in a clear-cut forest because of one logger named Dennis who was so moved by it's immense size and age that he wrapped a "Leave Tree" ribbon around it, effectively saving it from being cut down.
