Christ’s atoning work is not isolated to the cross but includes His resurrection and ascension as one unified saving event. When we look at Hebrews 8–9, and the Levitical Day of Atonement, in the Old Testament, the sacrifice was not complete when the animal was slain—the high priest had to carry the blood into the Holy of Holies and present it before God. In the same way, Jesus not only died as the perfect sacrifice but also ascended into the true heavenly sanctuary, entering God’s presence with His once-for-all offering to secure eternal redemption. The contrast is between the repeated, outwardly cleansing sacrifices of the old covenant and the once-for-all, conscience-cleansing sacrifice of Christ. Earthly rituals purified externally and had to be performed continually, but Jesus entered heaven itself—not a copy made with hands—by means of His own blood. His death, resurrection, and ascension together fulfill what the tabernacle and its sacrifices foreshadowed: a better covenant inaugurated by a better sacrifice that truly removes sin and opens access to God. Finally, the ascension is presented as the decisive proof that Christ’s sacrifice was accepted by the Father. Unlike the Levitical priests who stood daily and returned yearly, Jesus entered heaven once and then sat down at God’s right hand, signifying that His priestly work is finished. Because He has appeared before God on our behalf, believers can draw near with confidence, knowing their sins are forgiven, their consciences cleansed, and their access to God permanently secured through their risen and reigning High Priest. #bible #biblicalinterpretation #atonement #jesuschrist #jesus #theology #biblicaltheology #faith #ascension #heaven
