In June 2022, I spent 11 days solo hiking through the Cordillera Real, a 200 mile (300 km) subrange of the Bolivian Andes. Reaching nearly 17,000 feet (5500 m) in altitude, a faint to nonexistent trail, and minimal resupply, I caution against this hike for the average person. But for the experienced hiker with good navigation and first aid skills, this trek may offer a unique cultural experience and a potentially harrowing adventure in one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the Andes mountain range. My first "highway robbery" was when my taxi driver charged me 300 bolivianos (~$40 USD) to drive me from La Paz to Huayna Potosí basecamp when he promised it would only be 150 bolivianos. But my second incident was a little more concerning. I wasn't robbed at gunpoint or knifepoint, but my ride from was asking some pretty strange questions and I got the sense that if I camped at Laguna Chajna Khota, I might have had some visitors in the middle of the night. So after they dropped me off, I kept hiking until the sun went down...as far away from roads as I could get. #andesmountains #bolivia #southamerica #hiking #travelvlog #adventuretravel 00:00 Ancohuma, Huayna Potosí, and other aerial shots 00:54 Huayna Potosí basecamp 04:19 Tuni 10:16 Laguna Tuni and Huayna Potosí 11:04 Condoriri (Kunturiri) 12:12 Laguna Juri Khota 13:42 Laguna Sura Khota 18:00 Embalse Q'ara Khota 19:31 Rio Keka Jahuira 23:01 San Juan de Chachacomani 24:54 Laguna Chojna Khota 26:36 Laguna San Francisco 32:11 Achacachi highway 32:28 San Pablo de Tiquina 33:16 Hotel Rosario, Copa Cabana Gear List: Backpack: Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 55L Tent: Zpacks Duplex Sleeping Bag: Marmot Helium (regular) Sleeping Pad: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite (regular, wide) Sleeping Clothes: REI Co-op Silk Long Underwear (crew top and bottom) Sleeping Socks: REI fleece socks (discontinued) Stove: BRS-3000T Cup: Snow Peak Titanium Mug, 450 ml Poles: Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ Trekking Poles Shoes: Hoka Speegoat Socks (inner): Injinji Trail Midweight Mini-Crew Socks (outer): REI smartwool mountaineering socks Sandals: Target flip flops Cap: Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap Balaclava: Seirus Balaclava Beanie: REI Co-op Polartec Fleece Beanie Sunglasses: Cebe glacier glasses (discontinued) Rain Jacket: Timmermade DCF rain jacket (custom made) Rain Pants: Timmermade DCF rain paints (custom made) Fleece Shirt 1: Decathlon Quechua MH100, size S Fleece Shirt 2: Decathlon Quechua MH100, size M Fleece Vest: Decathlon Quechua MH120 Down Vest: Feathered Friends 900 fill down vest Gloves: Seirus Soundtouch Xtreme Mitts: REI Gauntlet GTX Mittens Stuff/Dry Sack: Hyperlite med, large, and xlarge stuff sacks Water filter: Katadyn BeFree Water blatter: Platypus Platy Water Bottle - 70 fl. oz.
