MOTHER (fan translation) | Longplay

This is a longplay of the 2003 Game Boy Advance re-release of MOTHER / EarthBound Zero / EarthBound Beginnings with Clyde “Tomato” Mandelin’s fan translation. MOTHER, of course, begins as a parody of Dragon Quest, featuring a contemporary boy, Ninten, who embarks on a bizarre psychic adventure through rural America to discover the truth about his great-grandfather George's disappearance. Along the way, he befriends Lloyd, Ana, and Teddy, saves the world from an alien invasion, and tries Strawberry Tofu. While not nearly as funny or detailed as MOTHER 2, released in the US as EarthBound, MOTHER is a standout title for its period because of its unconventional setting, offbeat plot, and uncommon emotion and sincerity. In this longplay, I also use the Easy Ring, an item the translation patch blessedly adds to the game to vastly reduce the amount of level grinding. This translation is superior to the clunky, outdated translation Nintendo unfortunately released the game with under the title EarthBound Beginnings. Not only does it clean up the grammar and remove censorship and outright mistakes, it also makes the translation consistent with EarthBound’s terminology. My longplay has a few shortcomings: I do not always do things as efficiently as I should have; I do not encounter every enemy, including the Gabilans in the Advent Desert or many of the powerful alien soldiers on Mt. Holy Loly; and I have to walk off a protect ring I used on Mt. Holy Loly in order to display the Mook Seniors. This is a re-edit of a longplay I originally uploaded on 20 June 2018. This version is somewhat higher-resolution, if you can believe it. In addition, I no longer have a few cuts to include songs from the MOTHER vocal album released with the original Famicom game. While I feel that loses some essential flavor, it should dodge the copyright blocks that my original upload received. (Though this video still got a copyright claim for the 8-bit version of "All That I Needed"!)
