This video was uploaded on 4 May 2020 to mark the Golden Anniversary of Manchester's Golden Garter Show Bar Theatre Restaurant first welcoming Tommy Cooper as the top-of-the-bill act. This much-loved comedy magician’s debut, at the sister club to London’s Talk Of The Town, was a 3-week run - commencing 4 May 1970, during which he sold out, playing to more than 25,000 patrons. In this 9-minute video, staff who worked at the Golden Garter at the time and Cooper's show business peers share their reminiscences of what he was like to watch on stage and spend time with backstage in a fascinating series of anecdotes. The video footage was filmed and edited by John Orchard – who worked continuously at the Golden Garter from March 1969 for 3 years, as pianist with the resident supporting cabaret: Shep’s Banjo Boys.
