Identity politics derives from competitive politics. It is not new. Politics has always been about identity, yet identity is so much like the layers we clothe ourselves in — it never defines the essential ’me’. A nation is about identity, about how its people imagine themselves as a collective. People do not live their lives in the past. They live in the present and look into the future. During India’s Independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi recognised religion as a fact of identity — but he used it to create an inclusive nation — ‘Vaishnav Jan To’. The US was founded on a national identity imagined around a strong Constitution and the institutions there-under. Its founding fathers drew ‘American exceptionalism’ on that basis. If all forms of dissent are labelled anti-national, and every opponent labelled a terrorist, the labels ‘anti-national’ or ‘terrorist’ lose all meaning. The Rwandan genocide remains a stark reminder of how identity politics can wreak havoc with the lives of a community.
