BIGBURY AND BURGH ISLAND | Full tour of AMAZING seaside holiday destination Bigbury-on-Sea, a picturesque South Devon village, is famous for its sandy beach and the iconic Burgh Island, accessible by a tidal causeway or a unique sea tractor. Burgh Island itself is home to the historic Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel, a muse for Agatha Christie, and the ancient Pilchard Inn, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty, literary history, and unique tidal access. Bigbury-on-Sea is a charming seaside village in South Devon, renowned for its expansive sandy beach and stunning views across to the iconic Burgh Island. This beautiful stretch of coastline, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), offers a variety of activities for visitors. At low tide, a causeway of sand emerges, allowing direct pedestrian access to Burgh Island, making it a popular destination for leisurely strolls and exploring rock pools. When the tide comes in, the causeway is submerged, and the only unique way to reach the island is via the famous sea tractor, a fascinating and historic mode of transport that has become a symbol of the area. Burgh Island itself is steeped in history and literary fame. Its most prominent feature is the magnificent Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel, built in 1929. This luxurious retreat has welcomed a host of distinguished guests over the years, including royalty like Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson, and cultural icons such as Noël Coward and The Beatles. Most famously, the island served as a significant inspiration and setting for two of Agatha Christie's renowned mystery novels, "And Then There Were None" and "Evil Under the Sun," further cementing its place in popular culture. In addition to the hotel, the island is also home to the ancient Pilchard Inn, a 14th-century pub with a rich history of serving fishermen and, reputedly, smugglers. Beyond its historical and architectural significance, Burgh Island offers scenic walks and opportunities to connect with nature, with various footpaths providing breathtaking coastal views. The island's unique tidal access and blend of natural beauty, glamorous past, and intriguing literary connections make it a truly distinctive and memorable destination in South Devon, drawing visitors eager to experience its unique charm and soak in its atmosphere.
