In Michigan, it was against the law to light up a beer sign inside a bar—for more than 70 years!?!?! From the end of Prohibition in 1933 until 2004, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission enforced a ban on illuminated advertising in licensed taverns and restaurants. While bars across the Midwest were glowing with Hamm’s, Pabst, and Leinenkugel’s signs, Michigan establishments were forced to keep their signs dark. In this episode of Dusk to Dawn Saloon, we dig into the history of this strange rule, how it shaped bar culture and why it lasted so long. We’ll also talk about how it affects today’s beer sign collectors—especially when it comes to rare Michigan neon pieces. Cheers to history, beer signs, and finally flipping the switch on a Prohibition hangover law!
