We attempted the Chair Peak circumnavigation on March 6th, 2025, but ended up aborting before the halfway point since Glen was still recovering from a cold. We took the standard trail to Source Lake, but ended up going higher in the trees (with a really icy and booted out track) so skipped the traverse under the waterfall. From Source Lake, followed the tracks up into Chair Peak Basin to the Thumbtack. Unlike last time where I traversed under the face of Chair Peak to the ridge, we gained the ridge early via a couloir right above the Thumbtack (had to switch to booting), then traversed along the ridge to a good spot to drop in. The snow on the North Slope of Chair Peak was the highlight of the season. I've never had a run with this much powder for so long. Once down to the lake, we put the skins back on and followed tracks across the lake and up to Chair Peak Lake, but the snow here was in full sun so got annoyingly soft and sticky. We decided to turn back here, so descended down to Snow Lake and traversed along it in full whiteout back to the normal summer access route. The snow up to the saddle was mostly in the shade so after we made it up and had a quick lunch, I decided to do a quick lap, and that was definitely worth it as there was a lot of fresh soft snow. After skinning back up, we traversed back to where the slope down to the valley was not so steep. Here the snow was pretty crusty and sticky, so the skiing was no longer fun. The exit out was even more annoying than last time with multiple sections covered in branches and lots of uphill sections requiring me to carry my board.
