J.S. Bach’s Fantasie und Fuge (bwv 904) is a mature work on a rather modest scale, but monumental at the same time. It can be dated around 1725 during Bach’s early years in Leipzig. The Fantasie is not a virtuose toccata-like piece, but consists of large shifting and embellished chords on a descending baseline. The Fuge starts with an ascending theme, which later is followed by a descending chromatic second theme. In the end both themes are combined in a complex polyphonic structure, but, as always in Bach’s music, in a very logical way and seemingly without effort. In some places, Bach’s complex harmonic structure takes the chosen modified 1/6’ meantone temperament of the organ to its limits. 00:00 - Intro 00:16 - Fantasie 04:01 - Fuge This unique and very versatile transportable organ was built in 2018 by Marc Nagels for Arno Kerkhof. It was designed as a separate continuo organ with three stops (8’, 8’, Fl 4’) and a connectable front case with nine stops. The separate tower containing the lowest octave of the Principale can be connected to the continuo organ. The ensemble forms a full Italian organ in 18th c. Venetian style. The organ finds a place at any location, within any orchestra, choir or ensemble. It can be tuned in any desired temperament, pitched at 390, 415 or 440 Hz.
