⋆˚꩜｡Happy Valentines Day Aurios⋆˚꩜｡ ─ ⊹ ⊱ ⊰ ⊹ ─ Aloha 'Oe. A mele (song) loved by many, but do you know where it came from and what it means to us now? In 1878 Queen Lili'uokalani was leaving the farms of Maunawili on the eastern side of Oahu back to Honolulu. On her journey home she witnessed a farewell between two young lovers. However today its meaning has evolved. Even before her rule, Queen Lili'uokalani had always fought for Hawaii's independence and sovereignty, and that only became more clear when she ascended to her throne in 1891. The Missionary Party led by Sanford B. Dole and other American colonisers saw her as a threat and declared her deposed. Then on January 16th 1893 American forces invaded the Hawaiian Kingdom, and a day after, they illegally overthrew the Hawaiian Government placing her on house arrest for treason. To avoid war and a significant loss of her people Queen Lili'uokalani yielded the monarchy, but she never stopped fighting to gain it back. It's rumored that during the coup and her illegal imprisonment she would sing Aloha 'Oe as a lament for her people and country. She never stopped fighting, and neither will we. We will not live in another time where we have to sing the words "until we meet again" in lament. This song means love, protest, mourning.
