Pontcysyllte is a word we all say on a daily basis, but how many people know what it means and where it comes from? Few realise it's actually the name of a giant bathtub in the sky, 38m above the River Dee on the dangerous borderlands between Wales and England. Up here pedestrians vie for what tiny bit of space there is on the towpath. Cyclists enjoy the thrill of pushing their bikes on the edge of a canal and trying not to lose them in the process. And then there's the water traffic: backlogged, impatient, going either too fast or too slow, clattering along like a bowling ball when you have the safety bars up. Traffic featuring the worst kind of person... the narrowboat driver. Or it could be one of Britain's greatest early-industrial wonders. A beautiful place that attracts tourists from all over the world. An engineering marvel still unsurpassed. A lovely place for lovely people. But not good for those with vertigo. Or inflatable kayaks.
