The reason I joined Wake Forest Baptist Health is that I'm passionate about research, patient care, and teaching. I decided to become a urogynecologist when I was a third-year medical student on the Obstetrics rotation and I took care of a young woman who had delivered a baby and suffered a profound complication in that she developed a fistula after delivery. Seeing the physicians who took care of her and restored her quality of life inspired me to pursue this career. What I love most about working with my patients is restoring their love of their quality in life. Pelvic floor disorders have a very negative consequence on quality of life and it's an absolute joy and inspiration to restore confidence in a woman- restore quality of life in getting them back to doing the things they love to do after we treat them for these potentially devastating problems. Having seen my mother go through a very serious medical condition, I've learned that involving patients in the medical decision-making and centering the medical care on patient goals and expectations is really fundamental to what we're doing when we're caring for women. There's no question that what differentiates Wake Forest Baptist Health is our commitment to research and teaching. I think it's fair to say that women who received care with us not only will receive the very best care, but may also be participants in advancing research in this field. I really enjoy doing yoga in my free time. I find that a mindfulness-based practice makes me a better well rounded physician.
