"Cultivating conservation: Why native plants are key to restoring bird habitat in urban landscapes" with Dr. Desiree Narango About the program: Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate across the globe—but what can we do to help? The green spaces in our yards and gardens can provide one solution to restore bird habitat in urban and suburban landscapes. But for effective conservation, we need more information to guide our landscaping decisions and plant selection. Dr. Desiree Narango describes the ecological and evolutionary relationships between plants, insects, and songbirds and highlight recent research on why native plants are an essential component of ‘bird friendly’ gardening practices and urban forestry. Desiree discusses resources to help identify which native plants, and how many, are necessary to create functional wildlife habitat ‘at home’. About the speaker: Dr. Desiree Narango is a current David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her research focuses on understanding wildlife habitat relationships and plant-animal interactions in novel human-dominated landscapes. She is currently studying habitat and diet relationships of insectivorous migratory birds using urban and urbanizing forests as stopover habitats in New England.
