Baker - Bagley Lakes Trail - Wa... We took the ferry as walk-ons from Anacortes, Washington, to Friday Harbor for a day trip on San Juan Island. After scoping out the town of Friday Harbor and finding the Visitors Information office, we were able to figure out the bus schedule for San Juan Transit; a hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus system. The day passes were $20 each and worked great for us. They also have an open air Jolly Trolley for $30. Or you can rent a scooter or 3 wheeler Moped. They looked fun, but I don't think we could've made it around the island with those. The island is bigger than we thought. We were glad we chose the bus/shuttle service. It was fast, fun, on time, and pretty flexible. Our 1st driver, who doubles as the school bus driver in the afternoon, took us directly to Lime Kiln State Park and Lighthouse, #1 on my list. Then he came back for our return to Friday Harbor where we had a very good lunch at the San Juan Brewery, and a tasty Turn Point Mosaic Hazy IPA. We were the only passengers on the shuttle, except a couple people on the way, so it was like a private shuttle. Couldn't beat it! A 2nd driver dropped us off at English Camp, which has an interesting history, and a 3rd took us from there to Roche Harbor within about half hour. We had plenty of time to explore the gardens and grounds at the historical military camp and the beautiful and extravagant Roche Harbor. Gene picked us up right on schedule for the return to the 6:30 ferry back at Friday Harbor and gave us some interesting information about the island on the way. The San Juan Transit shuttle bus turned out to be inexpensive and the best option we could have had for the day trip, although it would be nice to stay a night and take your car on the ferry to get around. Or a motorcycle would be fun, but I wouldn't trust the tourist drivers. One turned right from the left lane in front of our bus in downtown Friday Harbor. And there are bikes and mopeds all around. The bus was best! (And the drivers were really nice, like everyone we met on the ferry & the island.)
