Home to a young family with working parents, the design had to offer a relaxing ambiance. Both Eranda and Dhanushka commute to Colombo but work from their home in Thalahena, Malabe. From the outset, they sought a level of privacy that still allowed them to enjoy the outdoors, giving rise to the concept of a house with a courtyard. The courtyard in this home forms a double-height internal volume, and the play of levels within the house provides varying views of the courtyard from different spaces. It sets the tone for the house, aligning its ambiance with the outdoors and connecting spaces in a single line of sight, albeit on different levels, where the family spends most of their time. The living area extends into the courtyard for additional space and opens up to the garden. Generous volumes inside are shaped by a large foyer shared by the common activities of the house; the dining area, pantry, and TV room are all open to each other, borrowing and sharing visual and physical space with each other and the garden. This results in a free-flowing space with the illusion of a larger area despite the constrained footprint. Chimney ventilation through the courtyard keeps the house cool, while only the bedrooms have thermal control for added comfort. The dining area opens onto a wooden terrace, creating space for outdoor dining. Large openings and neutral colors blend with natural wood elements and emphasize vegetation to create a spacious and bright living space. The more intimate areas of the home, such as the bedrooms and bathrooms, were contained within a more solid block of the house to ensure privacy. Meanwhile, social areas like the living room, dining area, and kitchen are situated in a more open and exposed part of the house connected to the exterior. The house is shielded from the road by a double skin featuring an external wooden screen and internal glass. The road-facing facade on the West also responds to solar orientation to reduce heat gain during the day, comprising a wooden louver facade that incorporates cross ventilation, minimizing direct sun thermal gain.
